We’ve all heard the adage, “two heads are better than one.” Collaboration and cooperation are important factors in a team’s ability to get things done quickly and efficiently. It also plays an important role in a team’s longer term success and happiness. Even when we aren’t working on a common project, we often require help from other individuals, groups or divisions.
So why is teamwork so important and what are the lingering benefits of teamwork?
As individuals we each have individual strengths and weaknesses. When we work collaboratively as part of a group that shares a common mission we bring those individual talents to bear. Where I am weak as an individual, I can rely on my teammate to fill the gap with his or her talents and vice versa.
Based on our background and experience, we each bring a unique viewpoint on any given topic. When we collaborate with others, the entire team benefits from the unique perspective introduced by the individuals within it. This leads to more options, increased creativity and creates better outcomes.
People want to feel like they are a part of something bigger than them. They want to feel like their individual task contributes to the overall effort. When operating within a team, we are less likely to let down our teammates and our co-workers.

When we work together for a common goal, we have to rely on each other to get the job done. The more we work together delivering positive outcomes, the more confident we are about our own abilities and the abilities of our teammates. We begin to form a bond within our team. This trust enables even greater efficiency in future projects.
When we are part of a team, there is a certain feeling of comfort and safety that develops. This allows us to flex our courage muscles and share our unique ideas. Additionally, we are more willing to take risks and try things we have never done. Knowing we are not alone makes us less risk averse and leads to more innovation.
Summary:
We are all familiar with the basic elements and benefits of teamwork, but there are additional lingering benefits that should not be trivialized. Courage, trust and a sense of community can be considerable assets for the individual contributors long after the project has concluded and the team has disbursed. For this reason, Leaders should continuously seek opportunities for their teams to work collaboratively even in the absence of major projects. This not only adds efficiency but helps create a culture of contentment and employee satisfaction.
